Putting The Record Straight - Mektup Of Obruk of Hisar.

I was reading recently, a very detailed article by an American Kangal enthusiast, about the origins of the Anatolian in the UK. Whilst very interesting, the article was very inaccurate in many ways. The old "Mektup was purchased from a woman in a supermarket carpark" story cropped up again, which is mainly what has prompted me to make this post! There were no mention of 'non-fawn' or 'non-shortcoated' or 'no-masked' dogs being imported to the UK by other breeders in the UK, which was interesting, as there are plenty of photo's and original documents floating about on the net to prove this was the case! The writer of this article has only been involved in Kangals since 1997, so no doubt has been 'spoon fed' all that is necessary to make someone an instant expert! I too have been to Turkey, I know where their dogs are from, and even met several of the breeders. Some of their dogs are related to non-fawn dogs, and 'maskless' dogs, and yet this is ommitted from their brags about their 'PureBred Kangals'. This person has also used photo's which are property of Hisar Anatolian Shepherd Dogs, and yet, no permission has been sought! There are references to events which have taken place at our UK Kennel Club, which are innaccurate, and obviously, obtained from an unreliable source.

Like an old wives tale, passed down from generation to generation of Kangal enthusiasts, the Mektup Carpark story will live on for many a generation yet i am sure, but for any one interested in the actual truth, i refer you to an article i wrote several years ago. What exactly qualifies me to write this, well, I spent 18 years with Natalka Czartoryska - Hisar Anatolians, from 1980, until 1998 when she passed away. I inherited 'Hisar'. I inherited all of her detailed records, from well before ASD's came to the UK, journals, photo's, but most importantly, I have communicated with Natalka's husband of that time, Dr Flemming, who passed to me all the infomation which enabled me to write my article. Dr Flemming was actually the importer of Mektup of Obruk, along with Natalka. Using the information from Dr Flemming, and Natalka's detailed journals, I published the following:

"Mektup was imported from a shepherding village in Turkey in 1971 as a puppy by Dr.Nicholas Flemming and Miss Natalka Czartoryska. She was bred by the shepherd Ali Ozturk from the village of Obruk, just south of the Central Anatolian Lake Tuz Golu. It is Dr Flemming's recollection that a great deal of bargaining took place between them and the shepherd to obtain the puppy they named Mektup.

Dr.Flemming and Miss.Czartoryska were on archeolical field trips to Rhodes, Crete, Cypress and Turkey. They travelled Turkey extensively between 1969 and 1974, and Dr Flemming recalls how thorough Miss Czartoryska was ith her selection process, and the length of time spent with the shepherds and dogs before bargaining for their best working dogs!
When Miss Czartoryska and Dr Flemming returned to the UK, Mektup was registered with the UK Kennel Club as an ‘Anatolian Karabas Dog’. (Karabas meaning black mask and ears, of which Mektups was perhaps one of the blackest I've seen!).

In 1975, Dr.Flemming and Miss. Czartoryska acquired a male Anatolian from Dr.Whittof-Keus, this dog was registered Anadol Yali, and in May that year, Mektup and Yali produced their first litter of 5 all fawn puppies (Aslan Temmuz, Bayan, Bir, Karina, and Saranda Pat.).
The next year, Mektup and Yali produced another litter of 5 all fawn puppies (Dev, Raki, Sanli, Tolgar, and Zarif).

In February 1977, Dr Flemming and Miss Czartoryska invested in taking Mektup back to Turkey to mate her to a suitable working dog. On the 13th February 1977 Mektup was mated to a fine white working Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Akkus of Oltan.
The notes on this dog made at the time say "Outstanding top flock guard in the area. Special expedition made from village with owner into mountains to ‘sheep station’ – finally mated Mektup to Akkus after 5 hours of courtship!".

Mektup was then re-imported to the UK, and in quarantine, on 15th April 1977, a litter of 6 fawn puppies were born. They were registered under Dr.Flemming’s ‘Havuz’ affix (Bokiz, Dalga, Kaplan, Tarak, Yosma, and Zinde). Interestingly, Havuz Zinde was acquired by Miss Pauline Hosker of the ‘Truvas’ kennel, and then went on to Mr & Mrs Broadhead of the ‘Seacop’ kennel for breeding, records showing that Zinde whelped at least three litters.There was a further Havuz litter out of Mektup, before the first Hisar Litter was registered in 1979 after the separation of Dr Flemming and Miss Czartoryska’s partnership. The first ‘Hisar’ litter was the pairing of Havuz Dalga, with a Turkish import Arilan, owned by Mr John Lloyd. The mating resulted in a litter of 4 fawn puppies registered under Miss Czartoryska’s ‘Hisar’ affix (Ates, Karaman, Tugla, and Yavuz). The same year, Miss Czartoryska produced another litter by Mektup and Yali, this time, a litter of 6, still all fawn! (Simar, Yagma, Yakin, Yanar, Yatagan and Yesim).

One of the most well known Mektup daughter’s is Hisar Yarin, who was a big show winner. She went to Miss Pauline Hosker’s ‘Truvas’ Kennel, where she whelped at least 5 litters.

Mektup whelped a total of 8 litters between 1975 and 1982 (43 Progeny). Mektup produced dogs which were sound, long lived and adaptable, and she herself was hip-x-rayed HD clear and lived a long happy life with Natalka ruling the roost until her death in 1987 from kidney failure.

This article is compiled using my own personal experience with Mektup, whom I had the pleasure of knowing for the last 7 years of her life, along with Kennel Club Records, and communications with Dr.Flemming (Oct.2004).

I hope that this information will help to put to bed the myths, rumours and fantasies about Mektup and her origins.

People should not be so quick to jump on the band wagon - these bloodlines are world-wide, and are in many of the foundation stock of many kennels still breeding today - check your dogs pedgree, thoroughly - you just might eat your own words! I know much has been written to discredit Natalka, funnily enough, most of it after she died and wasnt here to defend herself anymore. The particular Kangal Enthusiast who wrote their bit on Mektup and Hisar lines recently clearly had never spoken to Natalka, or obtained confirmation of the info they had been given!! Tut Tut!! No one sacrificed more, or was more dedicated to preserving the Anatolian Shepherd Dog than Natalka.

I was looking through some old photo's yesterday, and found these. I love puppy photo's, and one of the pups from this litter went on to produce the wonderful Hisar Akar of Kandira in the USA, who is the sire of so many fantastic dogs.

Below is Hisar Balta (front) and Hisar Bazan who went to Norway to live with Jan Knutsen. Balta has managed to find her way into all the photo's!! Balta lived with Samantha Reed in Cornwall.

Below is Hisar Yarma, there are some fantastic photo's of her around, she was probably one of the best looking dogs Natalka bred (although this photo doesnt show it!). Sadly, she was never bred, as she had a very bad hip-score (67). Natalka's ethics meant that she rarely bred from dogs with hip-scores above the mean score provided by the KC (14), and on the rare occasion that she did, it was for good reason, and the litter was closely monitored.

We've still got our old boy, Gilby (Badlesmere Black As Night of Kehlibar), he will be 12 in May, and is still going strong despite having quite severe heart problems (Cardiomyopathy & Aeortic Stenosis). He's best buddies with Cain these days, and they get into all kinds of mischief together.

Sadly, Diesel passed away on 19th January 2009 after a short illness. He was suffering from Chylothorax, an uncommon illness, which is unfortunately often fatal. There is a link for information on this condition at www.vet.vga.edu/vpp/clerk/rockwell/index.php

Diesel was owned, loved, and the constant companion of Theresa. He was extremely well known in the town, and went everywhere with Theresa. He was the most amazing male anatolian, his temperament was absolutely the best, and was able to run free off the lead, with other male and female dogs, as well as being completely trustworthy with the young and old.

Thank you to Theresa for giving this boy such an amazing home and working so hard to make him the 'one of a kind' boy that he was.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, both human and doggy.

After almost 30 years in the breed, I have never heard of an Anatolian suffering from this condition, and I hope that incidents of such a devastating and fatal condition remain rare.

U.K B.V.A HIP-SCORES - ASD

I know the previous post about health was pretty 'heavy going', but having looked at anatolian sites, and blogs on the net, only a few raise the issue of health in Anatolians. Since my old site was 'dormant', I felt it quite important to bring ASD's owners, old and new, at least some of the health information which is lacking, particularly on the schemes here in the UK, and how they work, so reserected the old stuff.

Just for info, and those people interested in where their dogs are from, particularly within the UK, below is the latest, up-to-date list of BVA Hip-Scores for Anatolian Shepherd Dogs compiled using KC publications in the UK. The first item is the dog’s Kennel Club Registered name, then the date of hip-scoring, followed by a breakdown of the score, first is the score given to the right hip, then the score given to the left, followed by a total e.g 5/3 = 8. Next is the dog’s date of birth, and finally, the sex of the dog. Remember that the higher the score, the worst the hips, e.g 53/53 = 106 which is the worst possible score, 0/0 = 0 being the rarest, and best possible score. Having spent many years researching pedigree’s, and having a comprehensive computer program detailing every dog registered in the UK, health has always been an interesting subject to follow when it comes to breeding – having spent 18 years with Natalka, that is hardly suprising! Check out the list, your dogs ancestors may be there!!

Hip dysplasia is a condition in which abnormal formation of the hip joint results in unstable hip joint. As the affected dog ages, the hips gradually become arthritic and may degenerate to cause total crippling of the rear limbs. The exact cause is unknown but it is believed to develop because the skeleton grows faster than the supporting muscles. The imbalanced growth rate is influenced by heredity and diet. Other unknown factors may influence the development and severity of hip dysplasia. Not all dogs with hip dysplasia are affected to the same degree. The disease can be very mild and cause no signs at all, or it may be severe and crippling of the rear limbs. While the disease usually affects both hips, occasionally it only affects one side. Hindleg lameness, a swaying or staggering gait, "bunny-hopping" while running, discomfort on rising, reluctance to climb stairs or stand on the rear legs, and reluctance to run or jump are all signs of hip dysplasia. Though this disease is most common in large breeds of dogs, it may occur in any breed.

Unfortunately, not many breeders in our breed have their dogs x-rayed and scored for Hip-Dysplasia. Or, if they do have them x-rayed, they may not submit the x-ray plates for scoring on the basis of ‘out of sight, out of mind’. As with many large and giant breeds, HD is very much a real problem, and if it is not constantly monitored, can and will have disastrous consequences for the breed. If anyone ever tells you that HD is not a problem in our breed, they are lying! Ask them how their dogs score when x-rayed!

I hope to bring to you a little information about the system in the U.K for Hip Scoring in an easy to understand form. There is much literature about hereditary diseases in dogs, and I urge you to read up on as many as possible.

HD is a genetically transmitted condition, but there may be environmental factors which influence the final score, and so the final score should be regarded as an indicator of possible transmission. For the scheme to be meaningful and successful, it is important that a plate from every dog x-rayed be submitted for scoring, regardless of whether the dog is for breeding, and whatever the state of the hips, to ensure the widest possible range of information for use by breeders, clubs and geneticists, this is the only way to obtain a true picture of HD in any breed.
The procedure itself involves the dog being sedated, and the hips/pelvis area radiographed with the dog lying on its back. A clear, and even x-ray plate is required to be submitted for scoring. Once the plate is developed, it must be submitted to the British Veterinary Association (BVA) for scoring. This is done by the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme Panel of Scrutineers. The final score given is a sum of the points awarded for each of the nine radiographic features of both hip joints – the lower the score, the lesser the degree of HD present. The best score which can be obtained for one hip is 0, and the worst score is 53, therefore, 0-0 hips being excellent, and 53-53 being the worst possible. (a total combined score from 0 to 106). Whatever the score, the results are returned to the Kennel Club, and are permanently recorded on the dog’s registration record, and will appear on the registration papers of any future progeny. The owner is sent a copy of the score sheet, with a breakdown of the scores given to the nine points.

The ‘mean score’ or ‘breed average score’ is calculated from all the scores recorded in that breed, and divided by the number of dogs scored; at least 125 Anatolian Shepherd Dogs have been x-rayed and scored, with scores ranging from 0 to 68, therefore giving a ‘mean score’ of 14. The BVA recommends that breeders wishing to reduce the risk of HD should only select their breeding stock, dogs and bitches, from animals with hip scores well below the mean score. Many visually sound dogs, or top winning show dogs may actually be suffering from varying degrees of HD, but are bred from on the basis that they are show winners – unfortunately, it is not what is on the outside that is so important, it is what is on the inside that makes the difference!

Those breeders who are working towards the preservation of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog, working, pet and guardian, have a duty to ensure they are producing the best possible examples, from the best possible stock, for those who do not health test, what is their intention?

Elbow Dysplaysia

Details:
In the USA, dogs are tested for Elbow Dysplasia by the OFA. There is a scheme in the UK too which is run by the KC/BVA, but to date, only one ASD has been tested on this scheme. Again, it involves the dog being sedated, and three x-rays taken, one of the ‘extended lateral’ (side view), one of the ‘flexed lateral’ (side view) and one of the cranio-caudal’ (front view). The x-ray plates are then submitted in the same way as the hip x-rays, and scored by a panel of BVA/KC Elbow Dysplasia Scrutineers. The scoring is slightly different, with grades of 0 to 3 given for each elbow, as with hips, the lower the score the better, with 0 being excellent, and 3 being poor. A certificate with the full results is returned to the owner, and the results recorded on the dogs registration records permanently.

Again, the KC/BVA recommend that breeders select their breeding stock, dogs and bitches, with the lowest possible scores. Hopefully, ASD’s owners and breeders in the U.K will begin to take advantage of this scheme, not only to ensure they are breeding from their healthiest stock, but also, to gather as much information on the health of our breed, and to further the genetic research into hereditary diseases in our breed.

Elbow dysplasia is characterized by varying degrees of elbow incongruity, boney fragments (bone chips) , and ultimately, severe arthritic change. The term was introduced to describe generalized osteoarthritis (arthritis) of the elbow joint in which the anconeal process may be ununited, the medial coronoid of the ulna may be fragmented, and osteochondrosis of the humeral condyle may be present. Clinically, the symptoms range from an occasional, intermittent lameness in some affected dogs to severe, crippling disease in others.
Affected dogs are frequently lame or have an abnormal gait. The gait is often characterized by excessive paddling or flipping of the front feet. The animal may either hold the elbows out or tucked in and often stands with the feet rotated outward. Many sit or lie down much of the time, or play for shorter periods of time than other dogs of comparable age. They are often described as quiet or even lazy. Frequently, they are stiff when rising and tire easily. Exercise typically makes the lameness worse. In dogs with bilateral elbow dysplasia, the lameness may seem intermittent or shift from one front leg to the other.When both front legs hurt, dogs do not limp constantly, rather, they shift weight off their elbows by altering their gait and stance. These dogs will only "limp" when one elbow is more painful than the other.

The diagnosis of elbow dysplasia is made from a combination of clinical signs, palpation (manipulation) of the joints, and radiographs (x-rays). Correct radiograph technique is critical for making the diagnosis. Radiographs will reveal the incongruity of the joint. Sclerosis (increased bone density) of the ulnar notch is evident. OCD lesions and united anconeal processes are often evident. While the fragments of the coronoid process cannot readily be seen on x-ray, the coronoid process will be missing. Arthritis is often present, and can be mild to severe.
Treatment of elbow dysplasia is often a combination of medical and surgical management. The objectives of therapy are to relieve pain and maintain limb function, as well as to continue the dog at as normal an activity level as possible. Surgical removal of the fragments is recommended before the development of severe arthritis occurs. While the choice of surgical technique (arthroscopy or traditional surgery) may vary, the results with both are similar. Unfortunately, this disease is progressive, improvement is expected, but not normality. Medical therapy consists of weight control, moderate exercise and antiinflammatory medications. Each case is evaluated for the degree of discomfort and arthritic change before a final treatment choice is elected.

Eye Problems

Details:
The most common hereditary eye problem in Anatolians appears to be entropian. This is a painful condition where the lower eyelid inverts, and irritates they eye, often with irreversible damage to the eye. Ectropian is less common, but just as damaging as entropian, this is where the eyelid is loose, and turns outwards. In the USA, the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF) will certify eyes for one year if an examination is performed by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist. In the UK the KC/BVA also run a scheme where they eyes can be tested, the scheme is primarily concerned with the examination of the eye. The lids, lacrimal apparatus and the orbit are referred to as the adnexa, and although any problems with the adnexa will be picked up during testing, the certification itself is for the actual eye, and inherited diseases related to it. It is recommended that eye testing be carried out annually, and the certification is valid for one year only. There are varying guidelines as to when to have the dog tested, and certain diseases must be tested for before a certain age. Luckily, in our breed, we are unaware of any retinal or corneal problems, however, in the U.K, there are too few dogs tested, although there are far more in the USA, and eye testing is a routine procedure breeders seem to take. Again, as with elbows, breeders in the U.K should be encouraged to take part in these schemes, and hopefully, in the future, more owners and breeders will participate for the welfare of our breed.

Dogs with ectropion have a sagging lower eyelid that leaves the eye exposed and dry. It is caused by a lack of tone of the delicate muscles that hold the lid taut against the eye.
The irritation can be temporarily relieved with artificial tears and ointments to lubricate the eye; however, surgery to tighten the lid is usually necessary to correct this problem.

Dogs with entropian have an eyelid that turns inward. It is a problem that typically affects the lower lid. It usually stems from a muscle spasm; however, it can also be caused by scarring from trauma or inflammation from certain diseases that involve the eyelids.
When the eyelid turns inward, the lashes rub against the eye, resulting in irritation, scratchiness, tearing and redness. Surgery is often required to correct the problem.
The most effective treatment for entropion is surgery. Artificial tears can be helpful to ease the irritation caused from the lashes rubbing against the eye.

Hypothyroidism

Details:
In the USA, Thyroid Profiles are run on dogs. Hypothyroidism is a problem that seems to run in some bloodlines, it is considered to be a hereditary health issue, associated with poor fertility, bad skin, obesity and in some cases, temperament problems. The OFA will certify a dog as having a normal thyroid profile if the proper testing procedures have been followed, and if carried out by labs at the Michigan State University, or the Cornell University. Unfortunately the status can change, and it is recommended that the test be repeated on a yearly or every other yearly basis.

Hypothyroidism is a multi-systemic disorder resulting from deficient production thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone regulates metabolism, and therefore, affects almost every system in the body. Hypothyroidism is a very common endocrine disorder that affects middle-aged dogs. Genetics can play a role in the development of hypothyroidism.

Common signs are weight gain despite limited food intake, lethargy, weakness,poor skin coat (dull or dry coat, oily skin, scales), hair loss or slow hair regrowth, ear and skin infections, cold intolerance, diarrhea, constipation, fatty deposits in the eye, and occasionally seizures. Clinical signs are slow to develop and are only evident when 75% of the thyroid gland is not functioning.
It is diagnosed by a blood test to measure the level of thyroid hormone. Other blood tests may be performed to evaluate other body systems since concurrent diseases such as Cushing's disease (characterized by an abnormal production of steroids) or Diabetes can cause low levels of circulating thyroid hormone. However, controlling these disease processes usually eliminates the need for hypothyroidism treatment. Other systemic illnesses such as kidney and liver insufficiency, heart failure, or immune system disorders can falsely lower thyroid levels and this phenomena is known as euthyroid sick syndrome.
Treatment:
Overdose of thyroid hormone can result in panting, nervousness, increased thirst and urination, increased appetite and weight loss. If you should notice any of these symptoms, please contact your vet so the dose of your pet's medication can be adjusted.

Heart Problems

Details:
Unfortunately, as with all diseases in our breed, information is not forthcoming from breeders when problems occur. However, several cases of heart problems have been reported in the form of Cardiomyopathy.

The following information is taken from Malcolm B Willis’ book – Practical Genetics for Dog Breeders:
“Heart and Circulatory Problems – Some heart defects are acquired rather than inherited. When Parvovirus was first seen in the dog it produced a variety of symptoms, one of which involved heart trouble. Parvovirus outbreaks are now less common and even when they do occur it is rare to see associated heart problems. Acquiring heart problems of this kind will not be transferred by genetic means.”

Malcolm Dupries details the condition of Cardiomyopathy below:
“Cardiomyopathy is a term used to describe a condition which occurs to the heart muscle, when one or more diseases cause inflammation and scarring. This inflammation and scarring causes an enlargement of the heart itself, and the chambers within the heart dilate and become less efficient in supplying the body and organs with blood. The end result of a dog suffering from this condition is that the heart muscle will eventually weaken and the dog will develop congestive heart failure, and will die. The articles that the author used in researching this condition stated that the reason dogs develop this condition is unknown, but assumed to be genetic. Exactly how it is inherited is not yet documented, however, the disease appears to be very breed specific. There are some mixed breeds of dogs that have been diagnosed with this condition, but it is extremely rare. The breeds of dog that have documented histories of cardiomyopathy are: Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds and Saint Bernards. Doberman Pinschers have been most often used in the medical research on this condition. It is important to realise that a dog does not react to illnesses like a human will. The clinical signs of a dog suffering from cardiomyopathy do not appear over a long period of time. The signs often appear over a few days, when in reality, the disease starts at an early age, between two and five years of age. Researchers have discovered that male dogs are asymtomatic until the disease becomes severe, sometime between five and eight years of age. Female dogs are often asymtomatic until they are between nine and twelve years of age. Once the clinical signs appear the dog may already be in the stage of severe heart failure. The following symptoms may indicate a developing heart problem. They could also indicate other conditions as well, only a visit to the dog’s veterinarian for examination can determine what exactly the problem may be. The symptoms can occur with surprising rapidity, making the involvement with a veterinarian imperative as this condition is life-threatening. Observe your animal for unexplained lethargy, weight loss, cough, exercise intolerance, and shortness of breath. Cardiac arrhythmias may cause fainting. If your dog is showing one or more of these problems, get him/her to a veterinarian.”

After a turbulant couple of years, life is now settled and better than ever!! Cain is now 7 years old, and has moved on from horseriding, to motorcross! We have expanded in the doggy department too, and now have ASD's and Akita's. Ofcourse, we still have the 'old man', Gilby the English Bull Terrier, who despite his heart condition, is still battling on at eleven and a half years old!! My partner, Dave and I, are planning to marry in 2009, and have been doing extensive work to our home, which was in need of some TLC! We have also been without a computer, and have managed to use this one for our blog posts!!! Here are a few snaps taken on one of our motorcross outings to a local practice track nearby:

Although initially, we were undecided on whether we would be attending Crufts in March 2007, we have made the decision to attend. The main two reasons for this are the judge, Mrs Ann Arch, who has been a supporter of the Anatolian, and a dear friend to the late Natalka Czartoryska, and also as a tribute to Natalka's last two dogs who sadly died before Christmas. The tricolour boy, Arkadas Ates is the grandson of Hisar Musanna of Kehlibar, and we felt a fitting tribute to his grandmother, who also proudly strutted her stuff at Crufts several times! Our Hazine will also be attending, along with her little sis Hannah, and their mum Chanim (Huri Anatolians).

Mussy lead an adventurous life, had many different homes, but her character and temperament were a tribute to Natalka's breeding - a wonderful show dog, pet, guardian and companion right to the end. Mussy lives on in her three offspring, Hisar Hatira, Hisar Ataturk's Alev, and Hisar Ataturk's Cin, and in turn, she very much lives on in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mussy will be sadly missed by all that knew her, but particularly Pam, who has dedicated the past two years to ensuring that Mussy had the best possible retirement with her lifelong companion, Hisar Argun (Mr Red). Thank you Pam. XX

Hazine & Diesel's day out!

Theresa and I took Hazine and Diesel up to Okehampton today to meet up with Sally of Huri Anatolians and her dogs. Sally is Hazine's breeder, and lives about an hour or so away from us, so we deceided to pay her a visit! We ended up taking six, yes, six anatolians to the woods for a lovely walk - thankfully the weather held out until we got back to the car!

Charity Dog Show.

Yesterday (10th) saw another get together of the Cambornian clan at Fourlanes Charity Dog Show. The show was to raise money for a footpath so that the children of Fourlanes can walk safely to school and back. There was a huge turn out at Lanyon Caravan Park for the event, with refreshments etc all available at mega cheap prices! Anyone considering coming to Cornwall on a caravan holiday, or wanting a static caravan for their hols should definitely visit www.lanyonholidaypark.co.uk . All the usual suspects were present, except for Hazine, who was having a break this weekend, so Gilby came off the subs bench to fill in for her! As usual, the dogs had a great time, and we humans had a fun afternoon!

Today Gin, Hazine and Diesel were at Stithians Showground strutting their stuff. They were joined today by Kim, who came to offer support to his housemate Diesel. As usual, the dogs were excellently behaved, and attracted a lot of attention from other showgoers - a brilliant day was had by all, especially as the group managed to pick up yet more rossettes from Firsts to Fourths! Gin is now almost 7 months old, Diesel is almost 16 months old, and Hazine is 3 years and 4 months old. Kim, the Collie Cross is 6 years old.

Hazine wants to congratulate her little rough-coated sister, Hannah, on her recent show success! Her first outing was to Bornemouth show at 6 months and one week old. She took Best Puppy In Breed under Mrs Zena Thorn-Andrews.

A week later, she was at WELKS, where she not only took Best Puppy In Breed, but also Reserve Bitch In Breed beating far more mature and experienced bitches under Mr Dennis Coxall.

Congratulations to Brian and Cerys, her owners, and also her breeders, Huri Anatolians.

Thanks to Bob and Myra, who regularly update me on the wellbeing of not only their own dogs, but also the two Hisar Veterans up in Wakefield. I'm expecting more photo's from Bob and Myra as they are visiting the O.A.P's today!

For now though, i wanted to post this wonderful photo of Bob with Hatira (Tira), and Bulut (Cloud). These two dogs share the same father, Hisar Argun who is one of the oldies in Wakefield.

Tira is a special girl - she was the first Hisar puppy born after Natalka died. Her parents are both Hisar dogs, Hisar Musanna of Kehlibar, and Hisar Argun of Kehlibar (Hisar Veterans in Wakefield). She was the only pup, and was a challenge from the start! Bob and Myra have achieved wonderful things with these dogs, anyone who knows them will know what i mean!

Gilby - In The Ring Again!

Tonight my old boy made me very proud. Due to health problems etc, he hasnt been in the ring for 5 years. This evening, he came out of retirement to grace the ring at Nancledra Show. The old boy has still got what it takes!

Gilby was awarded 1st in Veteran, 2nd in Best Shortcoat, and 'Special' in Rescue/Rehomed. At the end, when Best In Show was being judged, Gilby was presented with a silver plate, and rosette for Best Veteran. It suddenly dawned on me that I am so occupied with all things Anatolian, that I haven't mentioned our O.A.P dog, who was once quite a charmer in the show ring!

His name is Gilby, he isn't an Anatolian, but he is an English Bull Terrier. He came to live with us early in 1998 at the age of 9 months. It was never our intention to get a Standard Bull Terrier, we were infact in search of the rarer Miniature Bull Terrier. After scanning many show catalogues (we didn't have the net then), we decided to go and visit a breeder in Kent who had both Standard and Mini's - Juliet Shaw of Badlesmere Terriers www.badlesmereterriers.co.uk

The place was amazing, the dogs were gorgeous, and had the most wonderful kennels. There were no Mini's available at that time, but there was an older dog who was in need of a home. He was mostly black, and very mad - he was a rescue, and we were warned that he was pretty much a hopeless case. Juliet said we could take him, but in the event of it not working out, we would get a replacement, who we met there and then. He was a wonderful white male, with red ears - a bit younger, but much heavier than the black dog we'd seen. However, always up for a challenge, we decided to take the rescue. So a week later, after having a whip round for the money, we returned to Kent to pick up 'Gilbert'.

Right from the start, he was a nightmare - hated the car, almost smashed the windows trying to escape. Hated the lead, threw himself all over the place trying to get away, and getting him into the house was another challenge in itself!! He attacked the TV, constantly ran at the patio doors, ripped up carpet, chewed walls and doorframes and generally trashed the place! I was determined to succeed with this dog, but all I'd ever known was Anatolians, and Bull Terriers are a whole different kettle of fish all together!

At the time, we lived on an estate surrounded by army ground in Whitehill, Hampshire. Plenty of space to lead train and exercise a loony bully! Slowly, we made progress, and started to attend two training classes a week. One for general socialisation and basic obedience, the other for ringcraft training. The obedience training wasn't really for us - there was some 'off lead' work involved, and unfortunately, Gilby didn't take to other dogs very well, so we decided to stick to the ringcraft.

We progressed nicely, attending local matches and open shows, and later, Bull Terrier Club Shows, and finally Championship Shows. He did really well at the shows, and was quite often competing against other Badlesmere dogs. Sadly, at just before two years of age, We had to have him castrated after an accident left him with a nasty injury to 'that area'. A huge blow, as some interest had been shown in him as a stud dog. As it turns out, I am glad he was never used. In 2001, at 4 years old, Gilby collapsed in our garden here in Cornwall, and stopped breathing. I rushed him to the vets and feared the worst. Our vet managed to save him, and feared that Gilby had experienced a heart attack. He was transferred to Plymouth, where our fears were confirmed. Gilby has Aeortic Stenosis and Cardiomyopathy. He has managed quite well, but has 'fainting' fits when he gets over excited or stressed. So, he was to become a 'couch potato', fearing that he would not have long left with us.

In January this year, Gilby decided to 'eat' a plastic storage box - I arrived home to find a lethargic, shaking dog amongst a sea of vomit and blood - another emergency dash to the vet. This time, our vet Nigel warned us that with his already serious heart condition, that a general anesthetic and long operation was probably going to finish the old boy off. After almost 4 hours in surgery, we received the call to say he'd made it, but was critical. He spent the best part of the week at the vets in recovery before returning home to us, feeling incredibly sorry for himself.

Well, he was 9 years old in May 2006, and still with us! He started medication earlier this year (Enalapril) to help his heart work more efficiently as he was getting quite bloated with fluid. The medication is keeping the condition well under control at the moment, so he's happy enough and more like his old self again!

The 'Camborne Clan' Strikes Again!

Yesterday saw the debut of Huri Hulus (Baby Gin) in the showring at Carnhell Green Rally. Theresa and I also went with our two little darlings! The Judge was Mr Malcom Cooper (Tatooa), and he had a huge turnout of dogs for the show. The weather was a bit grey and cold, but it didn't dampen the spirits of the doggy exhibitors.

Diesel was first in the ring, and collected a 5th in AV Non-Sporting. Hazine was in AV Open, and picked up 3rd place. Gin picked up several placings, including a first, which we were all thrilled about. Diesel was also constantly placed throughout the afternoon, as was Hazine, although she didn't compete in as many classes as the babies. Her job was to guard the car and all our belongings at the ringside, which she did to the full!

Unfortunately, the battery ran out on my camera after class three, which was disappointing considering there were 21 classes!

We did manage to get a couple of photo's of each of our dogs.

I think the local people can expect to see this threesome around a bit from now on, and who knows, maybe they'll appear at a Championship Show together sometime in the future!

Hannah is my Hazine's little sister, who will be making her debut in the showring very soon. Hannah's mum is Kurtkir Huri (Chanim), and her dad is Arkadas Ates, a tricolour male, who has previously been one of the dogs I have handled for Ann Grove and David Freeman of Arkadas Anatolians.

As the summer holidays are now underway, the fields that we usually go to are more busy, so we're now exercising the dogs at Theresa's horse field - lots of new smells and animals, including several badger and fox holes which are in need of regular inspection by the livestock protection dogs!!!

I was just asked recently to write a brief history of the Hisar kennel name - straightforward and brief? No chance!!

The kennel name of Hisar was chosen by the late Natalka Czartoryska and granted by The U.K Kennel Club in July 1976. Hisar is a Turkish word, and translates to 'Fortress' or 'Castle' in English.

At this time, Natalka was in partnership with Dr Nick Flemming, owner of the Havuz kennel name. Havuz is Turkish for 'Lake' or 'Pond'.

Nick and Natalka had spent much time traveling all over the world, in particular Rhodes, Crete, Cypress and Turkey on archaeological field trips. They traveled Turkey extensively between 1969 and 1974, and in 1971, they imported a working Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Mektup. Nick recalled to me some time ago how thorough Natalka was with her selection process, and how much time she spent with the shepherds and their dogs, selecting only their best working Anatolian Shepherd Dogs. She very much valued everything she learned from the shepherds on her trips to Turkey, especially between the mid 70's and late 90's, where she visited 11 times!

On 12th July 1975 their first litter was born. Whelped from Turkish Import Mektup Of Obruk and sired by Anadol Yali of Hisar.

In 1976, Natalka applied to the Kennel Club for the kennel name of Hisar for registering her Anatolian litters, but at this time, Nick's kennel name of Havuz was used.

In 1977, Nick and Natalka invested in taking Mektup back to Turkey to find a working Anatolian Shepherd Dog to mate her back to, and on 13th February 1977, Mektup was mated to Akkus of Oltan. In April of that year, the puppies were born in quarantine.

There were 4 Havuz litters in total between 1975 and 1977. In 1979, following the separation of Nick and Natalka, the first Hisar litter was born.

Natalka imported a total of 13 dogs from Turkey:

Beyaz of Meander (Piggy) in 1968, a white male.
Mektup of Obruk from Hisar (Mekki) in 1971, a pinto female.
Aslan of Divanlar (Aslan) in 1975, a fawn male with reverse mask.
Almila of Bozuyuk (Almila), in 1980, a fawn female.
Gulperi of Dagistan (Gul) in 1980, a white female who whelped a litter of 9 in quarantine.
Melemez Yigit of Yazurdu (Melli) in 1980, a fawn female who whelped a litter of 3 in quarantine.
Tarkan of Kanber (Tarki) in 1980, a red fawn rough coated male.
Zahir of Hasan Patrik (Zahir) in 1980, a fawn male.
Boncuk of Sarioren (Bonny) in 1987, a fawn female.
Kara of Sarioren (Kat) in 1987, black/fawn female, daughter of above.
Palah of Asagli (Palah) in 1987, a fawn male.
Altay of Akarca Koyu (Altay) in 1988, a pinto bitch.
Yazdik of Uluk Kaya (Big Red) in 1988, a red fawn male.

These are the very lines she based her Hisar kennels on, with Mektup being her foundation, closely followed by her other wonderful imports. These are the very lines that continue today in all of our dogs, including some of the Karabash/Kangal lines which are so highly prized. Natalka invested so much in her dogs, and her imports which were all hip x-rayed, some even before leaving Turkey! Natalka was probably the strongest promoter of health-checking and hip-scoring her dogs, and only breeding from the best possible examples.

In total, there are 214 dogs registered under the Hisar kennel name. Those traveled far and wide, and those dogs have in turn been the foundation for so many kennels around the world.

I had met Natalka in 1980 when I was a small child. From then on, she was a constant, and important part of my life - sharing the ups and downs, the successes and the failures, the joy and the sadness both within the Anatolian world and outside of it. Sadly, on September 15th 1998, Natalka passed away. Just before her death, she had started to sign her dogs over to me and in March 1999, I inherited the Hisar kennel name and the legacy which goes with it from Natalka - her final wish.

Today was Camborne Agricultural Show. My friend Theresa and I decided to take our Anatolians, Hazine and Diesel for a bit of a fun day out. We walked to the showground, which was about a mile from my house, and it was blisteringly hot! No sooner had we arrived, when we met up with Mark and Dawn, who have recently got a puppy called Gin from Sally Endacott-Phillips of Huri Anatolians. Sally is also the breeder of Hazine, and Gin and Hazine also have the same mum! As always Anatolians attract alot of attention from people, some just wanting to comment about the size, or those genuinely intrigued as to what breed they are, and wanting to know more. Well, we too found ourselves intrigued today, when we literally bumped into two very rare dogs. These dogs were Northern Inuits, and lived locally! They belonged to Ben and Emma, and were two stunning dogs - one white, and one grey and white. Amazingly, the three ASD's and the two Inuits got along really well!

Now, to the main successes of the day! Hazine and Diesel competed against each other in the A.V Non-Sporting Class, with Hazine being placed 2nd out of a huge class, but after that, the glory was all Diesel's! He went on to take three wonderful trophies - one for Best Re-Homed Dog, one for Best Over 15", and finally, Best In Show - Novelty! Our Judge today was Mr C Caspall (Colynthia).

Hazine Takes Best of Breed!

Paignton Champ Show is the closest Champ show to us, and is a wonderful show to attend. It takes about 2 hours to get there by car, and as we were expected in the ring at 10am, we decided to get there in plenty of time.

Our journey started at 6.45am, my mum and I drove up to Sallys house (Huri Anatolians), where we met up, and then travelled in convoy to the showground, about half an hour from her home.

We had a truly wonderful day. There was a good entry for our judge, Mr Vernon Miles (Kurtkir), and judging started at 10am prompt. There were no puppies present on the day, so the first class in the ring was Post Graduate Dog. I handled a three year old male, Besici Ayi for Jill O'Flaherty in this class, of which he was the only dog present, and was awarded the 1st place. I also handled this dog for Jill in the Open Dog class, where he was awarded 3rd place. Best Dog was awarded to Rachel Ancell's Nadide Kadir, and Reserve Dog was awarded to Mr White's Cazibe Cahil.

Next up was Post Graduate Bitch. I handled my own bitch Hazine in this class, which included competition from Sally's bitch Tuzla Tulin of Huri, and the litter sister of Best Dog. Hazine was awarded 1st place in this class, with Mr White's Cazibe Ferdi being awarded 2nd place, and Sally's Tulin in 3rd place.

Next, Open Bitch. This was won by Anne Yates with her French Import Ullikumis Ridil des Shumagins of Asalet, with her partner, John Field in 2nd place with their other French Import Ugarit Yacat des Shumagins of Asalet. 3rd place went to Rachel Ancell's French Import Raspa Du Val De La Boisserie.

Anne and I then competed for Best Bitch. The judge awarded Hazine with Best Bitch, and Ulli with Reserve Bitch.

Crunch time! Best of Breed. Hazine then had to try and beat Rachel Ancell's Kadir to win. A tough one in any situation, but against such a superb young male, I was sure he would get the Best Of Breed. After moving the dogs again for the judge, he awarded Best Of Breed to Hazine! I couldn't believe it! My first ever Best Of Breed showing my own dog and not someone else's!

It was an amazing day, and we decided to stay and compete in the Group Ring at the end of the day. We had quite a few hours to wait, and it was an incredibly hot day, with very little shade at this showground, so we found a quiet corner in the collecting area of the big ring and set up 'base' in the corner.

The dogs were hot, so wet towels and cool drinks for them, and cool drinks and lunch for us!

We were finally called in to the Group Ring at about 5pm. Every Best Of Breed from the Pastoral Group was present, and there was great support for every dog at ringside. Anatolians tend not to get anywhere in the group ring, and true to form, we didn't! However, it was a pleasure to have taken part, and to have been able to represent the rougher coated Anatolian in the big ring. The Group was eventually won by the Australian Shepherd Dog.

Happy with our successes, we packed up, and left the showground. The traffic leaving was quite heavy, so several miles of traffic jams before hitting the motorway. Half an hour along the way, Sally peeled off the dual carriageway to go home, after much tooting and flashing of headlights we continued what would usually be about and hour and a quarters journey. WRONG!!! A couple of miles down the road, one of our back tyres blew out in the fast lane of the dual carriageway. With smoke and sparks flying, we managed to stop fairly safely, and a bit shaken up, we got out to inspect the damage. We got Hazine out of the car, and I decided that I would try and have a go at changing the wheel myself - frantically trying to remember what my dad had taught me years before, I managed to change the wheel to the 'space-saver' spare wheel, which seemed to be about half the size! We got ourselves together and continued home at about half the speed as there are restrictions on how fast you can travel on these little frizbee wheels! So finally, at about 10pm we limped back into the driveway, tired, a bit shakey, but still so very very happy with what had happened at the show earlier in the day!

Double Trouble!

Here they are again! The gruesome twosome! Hazine and Diesel. Diesel is now almost 14 months old, and is beginning to mature a little (physically but NOT mentally!). He is about 30" at the shoulder, roughly the same as Hazine. It is easy to see from this picture how the different colours of the dogs is deceiving. They have a very similar head shape, and both have the same ear carriage when alert. Hazine obviously has a more feminine head, and she too still has some maturing to do. Both dogs are coming along nicely, and really are the best of buddies. We take them out together a couple of times a week, and we are very fortunate to have 'safe' areas around where we can let these two dogs off together to explore their surroundings. Like with all Anatolians, great care is taken, and careful supervision is required. They are typically stubborn, and have 'selective' hearing, especially when you want them to come back!
Diesel is very much the baby, and Hazine is definitely the instigator - I wonder how long that will stay like that?

Just couldn't resist posting a few more riding photo's! Cain's started a new 'hobby' for both myself, and my friend Jane now too! We went up to Wheal Buller today for an hour ride through some of the most beautiful Cornish countryside. Jane's pony was called Nutmeg, and I had the pleasure of riding Tilda.

Hisar Veterans

Hisar Argun & Hisar Musanna.

Natalka's last two litters of puppies were born in November 1994. There was one puppy from each litter who found a special place in Natalka's heart. One was called Hisar Argun. He was a wonderful red/fawn male, who spent most of his time living in Natalka's jacket until he was too big to be carried! The other was Hisar Musanna, a pale fawn bitch, who had been rescued back from a sad situation. Both were hip-scored, Argun with a score of 9, and Musanna with a score 14. Natalka had great plans for these two puppies, but sadly, her plans were never realised due to her death in 1998. Although Argun and Musanna had always lived together at Natalka's, they found themselves separated in loving homes in different parts of England. Sadly, due to unfortunate circumstances, both dogs ended up needing help again.

In 2003, I collected Argun from his home where he was no longer able to stay, and drove him the 6 hour drive to Wakefield in Yorkshire to his new home with Pam. Pam is an experienced Anatolian person, and had infact owned Argun's auntie, Hisar Basma until she passed away due to ill health. Unfortunately, in November 2004, his old kennel buddy Musanna also found herself in need of rescuing. This time, I traveled with Ann (Arkadas Anatolians), and we drove up to Surrey to collect Musanna. Thankfully, Pam understanding that Argun and Musanna were very special dogs, agreed that Musanna could go and live with her and Argun. We all felt that it was perhaps the right thing to do, and Natalka would have wanted these oldies to spend their last years together. Their re-union was very emotional, and they greeted eachother like the long lost friends that they were.

Another amazing co-incidence is that living about 45 minutes away is Bob and Myra - also Anatolian people. They have become friends with Pam, and have visited Argun and Musanna on several occasions, and been able to mail photo's and updates of the dogs to me. Pam rings me almost every day and lets me know how they are doing. They've also got 'new' names - Mr Red and Miss Mus! They are an extremely important part of Pam's life, and go everywhere with her. They are just about the two most well known dogs in Wakefield, traveling on buses and having excursions into towns, it is my understanding that they are allowed into places that are normally 'dog free zones' - mind you, I'm not sure I know many people who would argue with a 4'10" lady and two huge Anatolians!

Hazine and Diesel have become wonderful friends, and share a good workout at the local rugby field twice a week! He is a wonderful boy, with the sweetest temperament. Being a year old, he is still a baby, and still very mischievous and inquisitive, exploring every inch of the field with his new found buddy!

Today was Bath Champ Show. A chance to qualify our dogs for Crufts 2007. I took our bitch, Hazine, and met up with Sally of Huri Anatolians, who also happens to be Hazine's breeder. Together, we took Hazine, and her dam, Chanim, along to the show. We arrived about 11.30am, and were greeted by Brian Tyson, with his male, Zebani. We went along to the benches to get ourselves organised, and met up with other Anatolian friends, including several members of Hazine and Chanim's family, including Uncle Worf, and Auntie Kira! There were 20 Anatolians entered, a very respectable entry for our breed here in the U.K. Hazine came 2nd in her Post.Grad.Bitch Class, and Chanim came 1st in her Open Bitch Class, and went on to take Best Bitch, and BEST OF BREED! Uncle Worf took the Open Dog Class, and Reserve Dog in Breed. Quite the family affair!

Meet Cain. He is my 5 year old son. From an early age, Cain had difficulties with some of the everyday things other children take for granted. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with Dyspraxia, a condition caused by an immaturity of neurone development in the brain, causing an impairment or immaturity of the organisation of movement, problems of language, perception and thought. Cain spends much of his time frustrated by situations, whether they be at home, or school, and as a family, we are trying to learn about how this condition will affect Cain as he gets older, and how we can adapt to make his life easier. It is early days yet, and we are slowly finding our way. At this point, I would like to thank two very very dear friends of ours, Brian and Cerys Tyson, who without their support and encouragement, we would have perhaps given up before now, instead with their knowledge and constant guiding hand, we have had great successes, and they have given us the strength to push for the right help and right equipment for Cain. Thank you Brian and Cerys :-) Cain loves Anatolian Shepherd Dogs, from the first day he was home from hospital, he was surrounded by them. Cain's special friend is Hazine a.k.a Jazzy, she is never far from his side. Another beautiful friendship is in the making - Cain has started riding a lovely little pony called Jade I had read somewhere, and seen on the TV how children with all kinds of physical and neurological disabilities benefited greatly from interaction with animals, and in particular, ponies, so I thought I'd give it a try! Cain seems to be a natural horseman - very relaxed and completely at ease and calm with Jade. I am hoping to make their little get together a regular thing, and hopefully in time, we will see Cain benefiting from their little outings. The following was written by the Late Natalka Czartoryska of Hisar Anatolians on one of her early expoditions to Turkey:

The Guardian:

We travelled across the dusty plains of Central Turkey, in the rising heat of the mid-morning. Our two companions were already dozing in the back of the Chrysler Safari, heavily loaded with gear. The washing I had been waving out of the window had already dried in the rush of super-heated air, so I stowed it carefully, to stop it getting blown out of the car. We had gotten up before sun-up and breakfasted while the dew dried off the sleeping bags. There had been barking once or twice and a vague shadow had skirted our camp in the night. Or had we imagined it? Now we were getting as much driving done as possible before it got uncomfortably hot. In mid-summer a car parked in the sun can literally fry you, so you cannot touch it. But if you keep driving, conditions remain comfortable. My head nodded. On expeditions one catnaps whenever possible. The only one fully alert was the driver.
Summertime in the Middle East is usually very dry and one has to plan to carry sufficient water for ones needs. Every time you spot a fountain or drinking trough with clean fresh water running endlessly out of it, it is wise to stop, tip the stale hot reserve out and replenish.
Now in the distance I saw a tree, the first one that day. Interest awakened, for trees need water. Sure enough, there was a big stone trough and the ever-gushing pipe sticking out of a small wall behind it. The 'cesme', or 'spring' was alive and well, not dried up like some in mid-summer.
We stopped and blinking through the heat haze, I carried our plastic screw cap cans to the source of all life. There was a good-sized flock of fat -tailed sheep resting within the exact boundaries made by the shade of the great tree. Lucky sheep I thought, most have to stand, head down in the sun. Jam-packed they lay very still, some with open mouths, panting slightly.
Water. Crystal clear, cold, sparkling. It tasted like champagne. There is an ingenious system of wayside troughs all over Turkey, spring water captured perhaps a long way off and piped underground, out of the reach of plough, animals and frost. I filled the cans, washed my feet, poured some on my head, oh bliss. Then - on impulse quickly dipped whole self, gasping, clothes and all. I knew that by the time I got back to the car my drip-dry dress would be merely pleasantly damp. Carefully I walked along the edge, avoiding deep soft pools of dust. Glanced at the sheep again. Not a flicker of movement now, as if carved out of stone. And no shepherd anywhere. Some devil tempted me to test: what would happen if I tried to touch one? Would it abandon the shade and bolt into the sun, or sleepy, let itself be patted, or scramble over to its fellows? Carefully skirting the flock I inched nearer, choosing the one to approach. Then I felt it like a stab! A gaze fixed on me; it was like a physical blow. Where… A few heads had come up, and there - oh my! That one was not a sheep. A big dog, right in the middle of the flock was slowly uncurling. Dusty dog and dusty sheep, I had not noticed it while all were asleep. His patchy tawny and white body had blended perfectly in the dappled shade, slightly darker muzzle made him look menacing now, as did his stance. He rose slowly and gingerly started stepping over the backs of his unconcerned charges, tail coming up, back ramrod straight. A wave of admiration hit me. Here was functional beauty chiselled to perfection by countless generations of work. Those long well muscled legs looked 'built for speed', that big body would bowl you over on impact with the greatest of ease…That and more flashed through my mind, while curiously my feet, without consulting me had changed direction by reflex action. Like drawing your hand from something very hot! I was retreating as fast as my dignity would allow. Keep Calm. Do Not Run. Above all - seem unconcerned. By pretending my path was a winding one (to deliberately turn and stare would be taken as aggression) I got a glimpse of him. He sniffed the air where I had been, and looked. You could sense him thinking. I could not help admiring the splendid beast. Foremost came relief that he had not considered it necessary to pursue me further. Safely back in the car I took a good look: he still stood there, at the edge of the flock, rooted like a statue. Then he slowly eased himself to the ground and rested his head on his paws, but still staring at me, unblinking. There had been no drama, no charge, not a sound. Just a rush of adrenaline in my case. It dawned: that dog was in total control, making decisions, using his power sparingly, as the breed has done for 6000 years. 'Çoban Köpegi' or in English Anatolian Shepherd Dog. And I had been instantly, mysteriously cured of all desire to approach sheep in that land. I had met the Guardian!
